What is a gap analysis?

The purpose of a gap analysis is to:

  • identify the areas in your company that require change in order to be compliant; and
  • estimate the scope of work required

The gap analysis will likely be your first audit.

Why should I start with a gap analysis?

A gap analysis will compare your current systems with the requirements of the standard. Where there is a shortfall, it is called a "gap". This will show the processes:

  • that are not currently in place
  • that do not comply with the standard and must be redesigned
  • that comply with the standard and must be documented
  • that comply with the standard and are documented

How does a Gap Analysis Template help?

Not only will a gap analysis template help you to identify the gaps, it will also allow you to recommend how those gaps should be filled to Top Management and give them a steer as to the scope of effort and resources needed to gain certification.

Gap Analysis Template Outputs - budgets, resources, timelines

Armed with this knowledge, it allows you to establish accurate budgets, resources, timelines and expectations which are proportional to the state of your current management system when directly compared to the requirements of the new standard.

Measuring progress & implementation plan

The gap analysis output also provides a valuable baseline for the implementation process as a whole and for measuring progress.

After performing the Gap Analysis you will have a list of activities and processes that comply and ones that do not comply. The latter list now becomes the target of your implementation plan.
